The Miss James II

The Miss James II is a custom 32' x 11' Chesapeake Deadrise style Kinnamon fiberglass hull laid up by Glen Manning, built locally and finished by Ricky Roe. She is powered by a 220 hp John Deere marine diesel, and is a Coast Guard Documented Vessel. She handles the bay's chop very well and of course has all safety gear. The electronic equipment includes Furuno radar, Si-Tex fish finder, and marine radio. She is a no frills fishing machine, but does have a private head (restroom) forward.

The traditional Chesapeake Deadrise has a rich history and many local builders were known to have built them "by eye" with just rough sketches. Of course all of the originals and still many built today are wooden boats. Local Watermen have used this style of boat to harvest the bounty of the bay for generations.

We keep her moored in Tilghman because it puts us near the middle of the bay, where the fishing is very good from year to year, and the local people are very friendly. Our first bay fishing boat was a smaller center console with outboard power and was unofficially named the Miss James. We fished that one for over 10 years before up-sizing.

The Miss James Is named after my little boy who died tragically in 1999 at the age of 13. We thought it would be a nice way to remember him and we get to say his name everyday. He loved to fish and enjoyed spending time on the Bay.

The Captain and Mate

I'm Captain Jerry Ashby. I was born and raised in Harford County, MD.  I discovered Rockfishing after I met my wife to be and her brothers took me to the Susquehanna river. I've been fishing and learning from some great captains in this area for over 20 years, and I'm rarely on the boat without my wife, Teresa, the first mate. She has been fishing since she was very young, and some of her best childhood memories are of being with her Dad catching Rockfish (also known as Striped Bass) in the Susquehanna river. Fishing aboard the Miss James and helping others to enjoy the Bay is a dream come true for us.
